Olhares franciscanos sobre os cultos do oriente (séculos XIII e XIV)

Abstract

Entre os séculos XIII e XIV, momento em que o império tártaro-mongol controlava grande parte dos territórios asiáticos, membros da Ordem dos Frades Menores começaram a realizar missões rumo a esse território, a fim de não apenas promover incursões evangelizadoras, mas também de conhecer os povos que ali habitavam e também as particularidades naturais de um ambiente, até então, pouco explorado pelos católicos do ocidente. Imbuídos da tarefa de divulgar as maravilhas encontradas nessas terras e enfatizar as diferenças entre os ritos pagãos do oriente e os sacramentos da Igreja de Roma, muitos missionários legaram relatos e cartas em que descreveram as singularidades das histórias por eles vividas e depoimentos de homens conhecidos ao longo da caminhada com destino à Corte do Cã. Mais precisamente, frades menores como Guilherme de Rubruc e Montecorvino procuraram reportar a relação dos tártaro-mongóis e de outros povos com suas divindades, destacando o formato de seus cultos, bem como o papel conferido a sacerdotes de diferentes crenças na Índia e China. Serializando relatos escritos por franciscanos nesse período, a presente pesquisa buscará examinar as metas das missões desses mendicantes e, igualmente, as suas impressões acerca dos cultos praticadas nessas plagas. Melhor dizendo, o alvo deste estudo será esquadrinhar como os seguidores de Francisco de Assis descreveram os costumes dos tártaros e de cristãos heréticos dessa região, como os alanos, nestorianos e armênios. Em linhas gerais, este trabalho procurará perscrutar o papel dos frades menores na evangelização de diversos povos e na catalogação das crenças orientais.

Between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Tartar-Mongol empire controlled most of the Asian territories, members of the Order of Friars Minor began to undertake missions to that territory, in order not only to promote evangelizing incursions, but also to know the peoples who lived there, and also the natural peculiarities of an environment that until then had been little explored by Catholics in the West. Imbued with the task of spreading the marvels found in these lands and emphasizing the differences between the pagan rites of the East and the sacraments of the Church of Rome, many missionaries bequeathed accounts and letters in which they described the singularities of the stories they lived and testimonies of men known to the during the walk to the court of the Khan. More precisely, Friars minors such as Guilherme de Rubruc and Montecorvino sought to report the relationship of the Tartar-Mongols and other peoples with their deities, highlighting the format of their worship services, as well as the role conferred on priests of different faiths in India and China. Serializing reports written by Franciscans in this period, this research will seek to examine the goals of the missions of these mendicants and also their impressions of the cults practiced in these plagues. Rather, the aim of this study will be to examine how the followers of Francis of Assisi described the customs of the Tatars and heretical Christians of this region, such as the Alans, Nestorians, and Armenians. In general terms, this work will seek to examine the role of the Friars Minor in the evangelization of various peoples and in the cataloging of Eastern beliefs.
