Abstract
The starting point of the review of Teolinda Gersao's novel Os teclados [The keyboards] is the relation between Literature and Music, announced by its title. That review demonstrates how musical elements, especially the those from the sonata form compositions, works in the structure of the text. We have analyzed the presence of the silence (under the forms of suspension of saying, blanks of the page, deletion of meanings, and others) as a means of textually staging musical effects and sound contrasts. We based the study on the theorizing of the constitutive silence proposed by Eni Puccinelli Orlandi, as well as music theory and history, mainly Donald Grout e Claude Palisca's ocidental music history, and the study of sound and its senses, by Jose Miguel Wisnik. Besides to highlighting the ways in which the dialogue between music and literature takes place in the novel, we aim to demonstrate the confrontational and resistance relations between oppressive and oppressed groups and how musical language can be used to signify what cannot be said.
