INTERSEXOLITY AND INTERSEXUALITY OF INTERSEX PERSONS: CONFUSION AND INVISIBILITY

Abstract

The lack of understanding from medical professionals, society, and the government regarding the existence of individuals who do not fit into the mistakenly imposed binary standard of sex results in intersex people facing an invisibility that brings a series of harms and challenges to their existence. Prejudice and discrimination, stemming from the comfort experienced by the privileged individuals who shape the structure of our legal system, foster a society that is not ashamed to marginalize those who should enjoy special protection due to their vulnerability. In this text, we discuss intersexolity as an aspect linked to the biological sex of intersex person and also explore intersexuality as a modality within the context of gender identity. Additionally, we provide considerations about the legal aspects that surround the necessary understanding of the numerous conditions that do not conform to the binary notions of male/female.
