Insetos e fungos, dois grupos ricos em espécies, coabitaram diversos ambientes por mais de 400 milhões de anos e desenvolveram diferentes tipos de associações. Os cupins estão entre os mais importantes decompositores encontrados nos ecossistemas e são abundantes em diversos ambientes. Seus ninhos podem ser difusos, e até bem elaborados e complexos. Interações entre cupins e fungos são relatadas em diversos estudos, principalmente na África e Ásia. A interação pode ser positiva para ambos organismos, em casos de mutualismo, e negativa para os cupins, em casos de parasitismo. Na presente revisão, foram detalhadas três das principais interações existentes entre cupins e fungos: o mutualismo obrigatório entre cupins (subfamília Macrotermitinae) e fungos (Termitomyces spp.); o mutualismo facultativo entre ovos de cupins e fungos; e, o parasitismo de ovos e dos próprios cupins por fungos. Além disso, também é discutida como algumas das interações foram importantes para a evolução dos organismos envolvidos.

Insects and fungi, two species-rich groups, have cohabited diverse environments for more than 400 million years and developed different types of associations. Termites are among the most important decomposers found in ecosystems and are abundant in different environments. Their nests can be diffuse, and even very elaborate and complex. Interactions between termites and fungi have been reported in several studies, mainly in Africa and Asia. The interaction can be positive for both organisms, in cases of mutualism, and negative for termites, in cases of parasitism. In the present review, three of the main interactions between termites and fungi were detailed: the obligatory mutualism between termites (subfamily Macrotermitinae) and fungi (Termitomyces spp.); the facultative mutualism between termite eggs and fungi; and, the parasitism of eggs and termites themselves by fungi. Furthermore, it is also discussed how some of the interactions were important for the evolution of the organisms involved.
