Na região do Vale do Paraíba, em meados do século XIX, o crescimento das elites cafeeiras impulsionou o desenvolvimento urbanístico e a construção de uma arquitetura que representasse a riqueza dessas famílias. Para atender às demandas, artífices italianos e suas marmorarias, localizados na cidade de São Paulo e em Resende, propuseram trazer da Europa o que de mais belo poderia ser feito. Não tardou para essa mão de obra especializada chegar aos cemitérios locais, criando a arte tumular paulista. A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo inventariar a parte histórica dos cemitérios do Vale do Paraíba a partir dos túmulos de maior relevância do século XIX, por meio da análise descritiva dessas construções e dos artífices em atividade no período.

In the region of Vale do Paraíba, in the middle of the 19th century, the growth of coffee elites boosted urban development and the construction of an architecture that represented the wealth of these families. To meet the demands, Italian craftsmen and their marble shops, located in the city of São Paulo and in Resende, proposed to bring from Europe the most beautiful things that could be done. It did not take long for this specialized workforce to reach local cemeteries, creating São Paulo's tomb art. This research aims to inventory the historical part of the cemeteries of Vale do Paraíba, from the most relevant tombs of the 19th century, through the descriptive analysis of these constructions, and of the artisans in activity in the period.
