Resumo
Emerging contaminants (ECs) comprise chemicals or microorganisms that have not been subject to routine monitoring in the environment, have not been previously identified, or are being identified at varying levels to those anticipated. PPCPs, PFAS, microplastics and emerging viruses are emerging contaminants. If municipal wastewater treatment does not remove these ECs, a treated effluent can become a source of environmental contamination. The objective here was to provide a concise overview of the two principal challenges associated with ECs in municipal wastewater: detection and removal.
