As mil faces da tragédia: Túrin Turambar e o legado trágico na fantasia tolkieniana

Abstract

O trágico e a tragédia são elementos que se fazem presentes nas narrativas desde os tempos mitológicos, e por isso legam uma tradição que extrapola o campo dos estudos literários, pois se encontra presente em diversas outras formas de manifestações culturais de determinados povos. Visando compreender a tragédia enquanto chave para a apreensão de um grupo de arquétipos literários, empreende-se um estudo a respeito das origens gregas para a tragédia, bem como análises pontuais de peças pertencentes aos três dramaturgos clássicos cujas obras sobreviveram até o presente. Em seguida, em ordem de estabelecer a literatura enquanto fenômeno artístico que comporta peculiaridades de diferentes perspectivas do trágico, analisa-se também o contexto de criação e obras relevantes das tragédias britânica e alemã para que se possa apreender como o método de criação literária do escritor britânico J. R. R. Tolkien é pautado na criação de uma mitologia que nunca existiu, e para tal, o autor se vale de mitos e de outras fontes medievais para seu fazer ficcional. Para ilustrar o processo de criação trágico de Tolkien, recupera-se o herói trágico finlandês Kullervo para somente então adentrar em uma análise aprofundada sobre a criação de Túrin Turambar, o protagonista e herói trágico de Os Filhos de Húrin, uma manifestação do arquétipo do herói trágico, que conta com um legado desde Édipo.

The tragic and the tragedy are elements that have been present in the narratives since mythological times, and for this reason they bequeath a tradition that goes beyond the field of literary studies, as it is present in several other forms of cultural manifestations of certain peoples. Aiming to understand tragedy as a key to the apprehension of a group of literary archetypes, a study about the Greek origins of tragedy is undertaken, as well as specific analyzes of plays belonging to the three classic playwrights whose works have survived to the present. Then, in order to establish literature as an artistic phenomenon that includes peculiarities from different perspectives of the tragic, the context of creation and relevant works of British and German tragedies are also analyzed in order to understand how the method of literary creation of the British writer J. R. R. Tolkien is based on the creation of a mythology that never existed, and for that, the author uses myths and other medieval sources for his fictional work. To illustrate Tolkien's tragic creation process, the Finnish tragic hero Kullervo is recovered, only then to enter into an in-depth analysis of the creation of Túrin Turambar, the protagonist and tragic hero of The Children of Húrin, a manifestation of the tragic hero archetype, which has a legacy since Oedipus.
