| dc.description.abstract | In 22 patients with malaria (Plasmodium vivax 9 cases and Plasmodium falciparum 13 cases) serum levels of thyrotropin (TSH), thyroxine (T4), 3,3',5 triiodothyronine (T3), and 3,3',5' triiodothyronine (T3 reverse; rT3) were measured by radioimmunoassay. As compared with 14 normal controls, patients with malaria had significantly lowered levels of total serum T3 and TSH. The total serum T4 was not signficantly altered. The serum levels of biologically inactive reverse T3 was increased. The data do not suggest hypothyroidism, particularly its primary form; they very likely reflect a decreased peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 as a sparing mechanism. | en |
