This study aims to analyze the classification of Coraline, a novel published by Neil Gaiman in 2002, as children’s literature, in light of the questions raised by its dark content and the presence of horror elements. To this end, we examine conceptions of children’s literature from Coelho’s (2000) perspective, as well as the concepts of the grotesque, considered primarily in accordance with the research of Kayser (1986) and Bakhtin (2010), and of the uncanny, grounded in Freud’s (2006) theory. The analysis demonstrates that the grotesque manifests itself both through the distortion of the protagonist’s reality and through the presence of misshapen bodies, human-animal hybrids, and the blending of opposites, while the uncanny emerges through the use of double figures, automaton-like characters, and symbolism related to the loss of eyes. However, in contrast to arguments that point to a supposed error in age classification when associating Coraline with a children’s audience, the study, by discussing the specific characteristics of children’s literature, highlights the historical persistence of dark elements in fairy tales, myths, and traditional narratives. Notably, for example, the character of the Other Mother draws on classic figures such as the witch and the cruel stepmother, while Coraline’s journey exhibits characteristics of the catabasis, a mythical motif associated with the descent into the underworld.
