Ischemic areas were obtained through ligation of the left anterior descending branch of the coronary artery (9 dogs) and by complete or incomplete superficial circular suture of the anterior wall of the left ventricle (18 dogs). Electrocardiograms (ECG), unipolar and bipolar limb derivations, unipolar precordial and epicardial derivations, were taken during various phases of the experiment. The dogs were sacrificed 22 hr or 7 days after ischemia and the hearts studied anatomically and histologically. The different ECG tracings were compared and correlated with the site, extention and evolution of the ischemic areas. The results indicate that when the thorax was opened, the precordial and the limb derivations frequently failed to reveal or localize the ischemic areas. The epicardial derivation gave more accurate information on the area and the course of the lesions and showed better correlation with the histologic evidence of necrosis.en
