A poética e a estética da ilustração: a leitura de N. C. Wyeth para as lendas arthurianas

Abstract

Estudo voltado para as dezessete ilustrações do artista norte-americano Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945), conhecido como N. C. Wyeth (1881-1945), para o romance The Boy’s King Arthur (1880) de Sidney Lanier (1842-1881), realizadas pelo pintor em 1917. A primeira parte da investigação é sobre a origem das lendas arthuriana e o edição de Lanier, uma adaptação resumida das famosas histórias do Rei Arthur e os Cavaleiros da Távola Redonda, cuja origem está nas lendas que compõem a obra Le Morte D’Arthur (1485), de Sir Thomas Malory. É parte desse exame a vida de Wyeth, o relacionamento profissional com a editora Scribner’s, as escolhas como ilustrador, que refletiram na criação de um estilo único, e a carreira do ilustrador, que tornou memoráveis as imagens de vários clássicos da literatura. Apresenta-se a poética da ilustração de Wyeth com as cinco características estéticas de sua obra: sutileza plástica, naturalismo clássico, ação sugerida, espectador-testemunha e iluminação, cujos aspectos são relevantes para a interpretação da pintura do artista e mostram como ele operava para a criação de ilustrações que o transformaram num dos nomes mais representativos da história da ilustração e o elevaram a posição de de destaque dos Anos Dourados da ilustração literária dos Estados Unidos (1870-1950). Finalmente, as ilustrações para The Boy’s King Arthur são analisadas individualmente, com a identificação dos elementos constitutivos da poética de Wyeth, destacando-se como se realizou a interação texto-imagem, bem como os apontamentos necessários para a compreensão da narrativa visual que compôs cada imagem.

A study of the seventeen illustrations by the American artist Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945), known as N. C. Wyeth (1881-1945), for Sidney Lanier's (1842-1881) novel The Boy's King Arthur (1880), made by the painter in 1917. The first part of the investigation is about the origin of the Arthurian until the Lanier’s edition, a short adaptation on the famous stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which origins liens in the novel Le Morte D'Arthur (1485), by Sir Thomas Malory. Part of this examination is the life of Wyeth, the professional relationship with Scribner's publisher, the choices as an illustrator, which reflected in the creation of a unique style, and the career of the illustrator, which made memorable the images of various literary classics. It presents the poetics of Wyeth's illustration with the five aesthetic characteristics of his work: plastic subtlety, classical naturalism, suggested action, witness-viewer, and enlightenment. whose aspects are relevant to the artist's painting interpretation and to show how he operated for the creation of illustrations that made him one of the most representative names in the history of illustration and elevated him to prominence of the Golden Years of the literary illustration of the United States (1870-1950). Finally, the illustrations for The Boy's King Arthur are individually analyzed, identifying the constituent elements of Wyeth's poetics, highlighting how the text-image interaction took place, as well as the necessary notes for the understanding of the visual narrative that composed each image.
