Resumo

This article seeks to relate the knowledge that is triggered in the young people's lives outside school in non-formal educational settings with the contents the schools set out to teach, as well as to analyse the school's relationship with the reality experienced by pupils. We have approached young people engaged in the youth collective groups, especially the Hip Hop group through the collective group Batalha do Vale in Presidente Prudente. Educational professionals that could give us an insight into the relations between the school and pupil-young learners were also addressed. This paper is based on the authors' research who tackled the subject from two different inputs: from youth culture to schools and from schools to youth culture. We therefore have dealt with the impasses and difficulties faced by the school institutions to dialogue with contemporary youngsters. We shall discuss Hip Hop as a strategy to reach out and engage young people in school contents.
