The list of waterways with human life is a major matter of preoccupation because it usually interferes with flawless performance. Even with an increasing quantity and quality of knowledge produced in environmental issues, however, specifically with regard to the extraction of sand in river channels, this is still insufficient knowledge production in Brazil and worldwide. This article analyzed the extraction of sand in the upper course of the Paraná River channel, between the municipalities of Marilena and Guaira in the state of Paraná. The sand mining in the upper course of the Paraná River channel longtime occurs, and is characterized by two types of mineral production: a) a sustainable mineral infrastructure; b) another without preoccupation for environmental preservation. Being the second bigger environmental impact on the river system.
