Resumo

The fine structure of the epidermal basement membrane of a free flatworm, Geoplana carinata RIESTER, l938 (Plathelminthes, Turbellaria) is presented. This membrane can be divided into two components: l, the basal lamina, a moderately electron-dense and micro-fibrillar layer 280 nanometers (nm) thick, sticked to the plasma membrane of the epithelial cells, 2, the subepidermal fibrous layer l to 3 micrometers (μm) thick. This second layer consists of a fibrillar tangle of fibrils l0 nm in diameter, which show a fine and symmetrical cross-banding. These fibrils are a component of the basal lamina too. The basement membrane is perforated by cell prolongations, which have their bodies in the mesenchyme, but are directed toward the epitelial surface. Microtendons of the dorso-ventral muscle fibers also cross the basement membrane to bind the epithelial cells. Some aspects of the basement membrane concept are discussed.
