O uso de linguagem de indexação na representação temática de livros em bibliotecas universitárias: observação com Protocolo Verbal Individual

Abstract

O processo de indexação em livros é feito por etapas, passando pelo exame do documento para identificação do assunto; identificação e seleção de conceitos até a tradução dos conceitos em termos representativos. Todas essas as fases são importantes e necessárias, pois o seu objetivo final está em recuperar a informação no catálogo online para sanar a necessidade do usuário. Para realizar esse procedimento, a política de indexação define e orienta como ele ocorrerá, escolhendo o tipo de linguagem de indexação a ser utilizada pela biblioteca. A linguagem de indexação, um tipo de vocabulário controlado, é utilizada na fase de tradução dos conceitos em termos representativos, em que é feita a conversão da linguagem natural ou livre identificada para uma linguagem construída artificialmente padronizada e definida e deve ser utilizada pelo usuário na busca no catálogo. Se uma indexação é feita de forma inadequada, por problemas relacionados a linguagem controlada ou por causa do próprio sistema, podem ocorrer problemas na representação da informação e, consequentemente, em sua recuperação. Por isso, a pesquisa possui como objetivo investigar como bibliotecas universitárias estão realizando o processo de indexação de livros e como os catalogadores recorrem à linguagem da indexação, a partir da orientação a ser seguida pela política de indexação definida pelas bibliotecas. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa foi utiliza a técnica introspectiva do Protocolo Verbal Individual, que consiste na gravação do “Pensar Alto” do catalogador enquanto verbaliza, em voz alta, todos os procedimentos da tarefa de indexação de livros, inclusive seus pensamentos. O Protocolo Verbal Individual foi aplicado com catalogadores de uma Rede de Bibliotecas Universitárias das áreas de Ciências Humanas, Ciências Exatas e Ciências Biológicas. Os resultados obtidos da análise das transcrições dos Protocolos Verbais Individuais revelaram que dois dos catalogadores durante o processo de indexação fazem uso da política de indexação e da linguagem escolhida. Um catalogador diz seguir, mas fez algumas escolhas que vão contra a orientação definida pela política. Pode-se observar que, quase todas as bibliotecas universitárias realizam o processo de indexação, seguindo o que é definido pela política e fazendo uso da linguagem. Os catalogadores relataram preocupações quanto à linguagem e o manual, abordando questões de como será o futuro da linguagem e da necessidade de realizar atualizações dos registros que foram criados antes do desenvolvimento da linguagem de indexação e que não receberam atualizações depois de sua implantação.

The indexing process in books is done in stages, going through the examination of the document to identify the subject; identification and selection of concepts to the translation of concepts into representative terms. All of these phases are important and necessary, as your ultimate goal of to retrieve the information in the online catalog to remedy the user’s need. To perform this procedure, the indexing policy defines and guides how it will occur, choosing the type of indexing language to be used by the library. The indexing language, a type of controlled vocabulary, is used in the translation phase of the concepts in representative terms, in which the conversation of the identified natural or free language to artificially standardized and defined languages is made. If indexing is done inappropriately, due to problems related to controlled language or because of the system itself, problems may occur in the representation of information and, consequently, in its recovery. Therefore, the research aims to investigate how university libraries are doing the book indexing process and how catalogers resort to the language of indexing, based on the guidance to be followed by the indexing policy defined by the libraries. For the development of the research, the introspective technique of the Individual Verbal Protocol was used, which consists of recording the cataloger’s “Think Aloud” while verbalizing, aloud, all the procedures of the book indexing task, including his thoughts. The Individual Verbal Protocol was applied with catalogers from university libraries in the areas of Human Sciences, Exact Sciences and Biological Sciences. The results obtained from the analysis of the transcripts of the Individual Verbal Protocols revealed that two of the catalogers during the indexing process make use of the indexing policy and the chosen language. A cataloger say he does, but he made some choices that go against the policy’s guidelines. It can be seen that almost all university libraries carry out the indexing process, following what is defined by the policy and using the language. The catalogers reported concerns about the language and the manual, addressing questions about what the future of the language will look like and the need to perform updates to the records that were created before the development of the indexing language and that did not receive updates after its implementation.
