Based on the description of the scenery, the adventure and the exoticism, travel literature was one of the most consumed subgenres during the 19th century, having been a vehicle in defense of Romanticism's ideals. We propose, in this paper, to show how Camilo Castelo Branco differs from these precepts in his novel Vinte Horas de Liteira, in which the literary craft is an object of reflection and the Romantic models are criticized.en
