Resumo
A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo identificar os formatos de distribuição dos seriados ficcionais nos serviços de Vídeo Sob Demanda Por Assinatura (SVOD) e diferenciar a estrutura narrativa das séries distribuídas de forma binge-publishing e semanal, na Netflix e no Disney+. Dessa forma, realizamos a análise comparativa das séries Loki (Disney+, 2021-presente) e Sombra e Ossos (Netflix, 2021-2023) distribuídas, respectivamente, de forma semanal pela Disney+ e por binge-publishing na Netflix. Para isso, definimos as categorias de análise causalidade, espaço e tempo, estrutura, gancho, recapitulação, iteração, eventos crossover, filler e efeitos especiais narrativos, de acordo com os estudos de Comparato (2018), Mittell (2015), e Bordwell (1985; 2013). Identificamos que ambas as produções audiovisuais recorrem da iteração para manter a audiência atenta, no entanto, o recurso é utilizado de forma diferente em cada formato de distribuição. Assim como o gancho e a recapitulação são recorrentes no formato semanal, e pouco usados no binge-publishing. Nesse sentido, encontramos diferenças no emprego das categorias de análise em ambos os formatos de distribuição. Por fim, a evolução da distribuição de séries nos serviços de Vídeo Sob Demanda Por Assinatura tem consequências significativas na narrativa das produções, ao determinar que cada serviço construa sua própria “marca narrativa”. Portanto, esperamos contribuir com os estudos das tecnologias midiáticas de distribuição de conteúdo nos serviços SVOD que alteram a perspectiva da escrita do roteiro audiovisual.
The present research aims to identify the distribution formats of fictional series in Subscription Video-on-demand (SVOD) services and differentiate the narrative structure of TV shows released by binge-publishing and weekly on Netflix and Disney+. In this way, we carried out a comparative analysis of the series Loki (Disney+, 2021- present) and Shadow and Bone (Netflix, 2021-2023) released, respectively, weekly by Disney+ and by binge-publishing on Netflix. Therefore, we defined the analysis categories causality, space and time, structure, cliffhanger, recapitulation, iteration, crossover events, filler and narrative special effects, in accordance with the studies of Comparato (2018), Mittell (2015) and Bordwell (1985; 2013). We identified that both audiovisual productions use iteration to keep the audience’s attention, however, each release strategy uses the resource differently. Similarly, the cliffhanger and recapitulations are recurrent in the weekly format and little used in binge-publishing. In this sense, we found differences in the use of the analysis categories in both release formats. Finally, the evolution of TV shows distribution on Subscription Video-ondemand services has significant consequences on the narrative of productions, as it determines that each service builds its own “narrative brand”. Accordingly, we hope to contribute to studies of media technologies for releasing content in SVOD services that change the perspective of screenwriting.
