Palavras-chave: Custo de produção. dc.description.abstract | IMPACT OF THE HORN FLY ON THE DAIRY LIVESTOCK: BIBLIOGRAPHIC REVIEW The horn fly, scientifically known as Haematobia irritans, is a fly native to Europe that reached Brazil through the importation of cattle from other countries. It is currently the most impactful fly in the national livestock industry. When infesting cattle, the horn fly concentrates in strategic regions, avoiding the head and tail areas, making it difficult for the bovine to ward off the fly. In addition to its preference for the dorsolumbar, hump, abdomen, and legs regions, the horn fly has a predisposition for taurine cattle, animals with dark-colored fur, and intact males. Bulls are particularly affected due to their higher sweat gland activity and testosterone levels. The main problem with the horn fly is that it remains on the animal virtually 24 hours a day, biting the animals 15 to 40 times during its presence. Despite being a very small fly, its bite is highly painful and has exploitative characteristics, resulting in considerable blood loss during heavy infestations, which can lead to anemia. The irritation caused by the fly is significant and evident, affecting the feeding and digestion of infested cattle, leading to a decline in animal production and, consequently, profitability. This pest affects the productivity of dairy herds in Brazil, and producers must remain vigilant and keep the pest under control. Key words: Irritation. Haematobia irritans. Milk production.
