Introdução: Desde a década de 1990, verifica-se uma crescente importância na identificação dos resíduos faríngeos localizados em valéculas e/ou recessos piriformes, durante a avaliação da videoendoscopia da deglutição (VED) e, possivelmente, associado à maior ocorrência de penetração e aspiração traqueal do alimento. No entanto, observa-se uma escassez de instrumentos que determinam a presença de resíduos, devidamente submetidos ao processo de validação, principalmente em âmbito nacional. Desta forma, tornam-se necessárias a tradução e a adaptação de instrumentos internacionais que auxiliem no diagnóstico e tratamento da disfagia orofaríngea. Objetivo: Traduzir e adaptar transculturalmente para a língua portuguesa do Brasil a “Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale” (YPRSRS). Método: Estudo metodológico aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Instituição (nº 5.166.256). Foram realizadas as seguintes etapas: tradução, síntese das traduções, aplicabilidade/equivalência operacional, retrotradução, síntese das versões traduzidas e síntese final. Resultados: Quanto à análise da síntese na etapa das traduções, levando em consideração os aspectos linguísticos de clareza e da semântica, não foram observadas discrepâncias entre as traduções realizadas pelos profissionais e as versões retrotraduzidas, sendo consideradas adequadas pela equipe de especialistas. Quanto à análise da viabilidade, abrangência e diagramação da escala, todos os itens foram considerados adequados pelos avaliadores. Na etapa de retrotradução, as versões se uniformizaram. Conclusão: O processo de tradução e adaptação transcultural da YPRSRS foi concluído e encontra-se pronto para as próximas etapas do processo de validação.

Introduction: Since the 1990s, there has been a growing importance in the identification of pharyngeal residues located in the valleculae and/or piriform recesses, during the evaluation of swallowing videoendoscopy (VED) and, possibly, associated with a higher occurrence of penetration and aspiration food tracheal. However, there is a shortage of instruments that determine the presence of residues, duly submitted to the validation process, mainly at the national level. Thus, the translation and adaptation of international instruments that help in the diagnosis and treatment of oropharyngeal dysphagia become necessary. Objective: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the “Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rating Scale” (YPRSRS) into Brazilian Portuguese. Method: Methodological study approved by the Ethics Committee of the Institution (nº 5.166.256). The following steps were performed: translation, synthesis of translations, applicability/operational equivalence, back-translation, synthesis of translated versions and final synthesis. Results: Regarding the analysis of the synthesis in the translation stage, taking into account the linguistic aspects of clarity and semantics, no discrepancies were observed between the translations performed by professionals and the back-translated versions, which were considered adequate by the team of specialists. As for the feasibility analysis, scope and layout of the scale, all items were considered adequate by the evaluators. In the back-translation stage, the versions were standardized. Conclusion: The YPRSRS translation and cross-cultural adaptation process was completed and is ready for the next steps of the validation process.
