Phraseology has come of age in Brazil. It is a theme of research in several higher education study programs in various regions of the country and has become a major focus of several research teams affiliated to the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq - Brazil). Although phraseology has not always been regarded as a specific field of research, it may be claimed that Brazil has a long history of study in this area, since one of the first collections of phraseological units goes back to 1908 and the first theoretical discussions of the topic date from the 1970's, culminating in more than 30 Masters dissertations and 20 doctoral theses prepared in over twenty universities up and down the country between 2010 and 2011. Brazilian linguists have been to the forefront in disseminating research in the area of phraseographic and phraseological studies in the form of publications in prestigious journals, both national and international, not to mention books on the subject written or compiled on the subject. Phraseological units are studied from many points of view, often at the interface of their relations with syntax, semantics, pragmatics, translation, cognition, learning and acquiring the mother tongue or a foreign language, computer-based linguistics, etc.
