Do pós-moderno ao pós-humano: a construção do sujeito e sua representação na obra de Don DeLillo

Abstract

Este trabalho investiga como o autor estadunidense Don DeLillo analisa a construção da subjetividade do sujeito contemporâneo nos romances Cosmopolis (2003), Zero K (2016) e nos contos ―The Angel Esmeralda‖ (1994), ―Creation‖ (1979) e ―Hammer and Sickle‖ (2010). A partir de um diagnóstico do presente, DeLillo realça os desafios e transtornos do cotidiano, abordando a experiência atual do viver, e representando um panorama de forças a que está submetido o sujeito. Esta pesquisa debruça-se sobre as estratégias usadas por DeLillo na composição de seus personagens, conduzindo ao desnudamento do indivíduo pós-moderno. Com base em teóricos do pós-modernismo (HARVEY, 1989; JAMESON, 1991; KELLNER, 2001; BYERS, 2011), do pós-humanismo (HAYLES, 1999; PEPPERELL, 2003; FERRANDO, 2013; COSTA et al, 2017), e do Antropoceno (CRUTZEN e STOERMER, 2000; CRUTZEN, 2002), dentre outros, esta investigação aponta para duas conjunturas principais que exercem influência na construção da identidade: o alcance ideológico do capitalismo tardio, percorrendo todo o tecido social, e a crescente expansão tecnológica que invade a vida pós-moderna. As reversões morais resultantes do capitalismo tardio e os estilos de vida propostos pelo sistema são representados de forma contundente nos textos de DeLillo. Consequentemente, há o esboço de uma sociedade movida por desejo e acúmulo, na qual o culto à mercadoria e à novidade envolvem grande parte da existência social. Ademais, as relações de poder constituídas neste contexto decorrem, em grande parte, da discrepância entre o poder financeiro dos indivíduos. Verifica-se, também, que a interação com a tecnologia é onipresente na vida pós-moderna, reorganizando as relações com o trabalho, o lazer, a comunicação, e promovendo, inclusive, novas maneiras de autorrepresentação, assim como modernas formas de monitoramento e vigilância dos sujeitos. Acima de tudo, as obras analisam a crescente dependência de aparatos tecnológicos, os quais se tornaram uma extensão do corpo do ser humano. Neste processo de diluição de fronteiras entre natural e artificial, entre homem e máquina, tem-se delineada uma nova concepção do humano. Esta tese apresenta, portanto, uma pesquisa a respeito de novos conceitos e modelos de subjetividade, analisados por meio das teorias do pós-humanismo. O estudo focaliza também o Antropoceno – a proposta de uma nova era geológica que enfatiza as irreversíveis consequências das ações humanas exploratórias no planeta. DeLillo concebe um universo que não apenas retrata as adversidades do contexto atual, mas também representa uma imagem distópica da trajetória humana rumo a um futuro apocalíptico. Portanto, o resultado desta tese contribui para o corpo de reflexões crítico-literárias e sociais a respeito do pós-modernismo, do póshumanismo, e do Antropoceno.

This thesis investigates how the American author Don DeLillo analyzes the construction of subjectivity in the contemporary subject through the novels Cosmopolis (2003), Zero K (2016) and the short stories ―The Angel Esmeralda‖ (1994), ―Creation‖ (1979) and ―Hammer and Sickle‖ (2010). Establishing a diagnosis of the present, DeLillo underlines the challenges and struggles of the everyday, and highlights the current experience of living, portraying a panorama of forces to which the individual is subjected. This research concentrates on the strategies used by the author in the composition of his characters, which will lead to a deeper understanding of the postmodern subject. Based on theorists of Postmodernism (HARVEY, 1989; JAMESON, 1991; KELLNER, 2001; BYERS, 2011), Posthumanism (HAYLES, 1999; PEPPERELL, 2003; FERRANDO, 2013; COSTA et al, 2017), and the Anthropocene (CRUTZEN and STOERMER, 2000), among others, this investigation points to two main structures that exert influence on the construction of identity: the ideological range of late capitalism, weaving through the entire social fabric, and the growing technological expansion that overtakes postmodern life. The moral shifts that late capitalism encourages and the lifestyles it proposes are represented emphatically in DeLillo's texts. Thus, we contemplate the outline of a society driven by desire and accumulation, in which the cult to commodity and novelty encompasses a large part of social existence. In addition, the power relationships formed in this context are largely a result of the discrepancy between the financial power of individuals. Furthermore, the interaction with technology is now ubiquitous in postmodern life, reorganizing our relationship with work, leisure, communication, and even producing new ways of self-representation, as well as modern forms of monitoring and surveillance of subjects. Above all, the texts analyze our growing dependence on technological devices, which have become an extension of the human body. In this process of blurring of margins between natural and artificial, between man and machine, a new conception of the human has been outlined. This thesis therefore carries out a research of new concepts and models of subjectivity, analyzed on the basis of a posthumanist theoretical framework. This study also investigates the Anthropocene – the proposal of a new geological era that emphasizes the irreversible consequences of exploitative human actions on the planet. DeLillo conceives a universe that not only portrays the adversities of our current context, but also a dystopian image of the human trajectory towards an apocalyptic future. Therefore, the results of this study contribute to the body of critical-literary and social reflections on Postmodernism, Posthumanism, and the Anthropocene.
