Escherichia coli enteroagregativa (EAEC) é um importante
enteropatógeno bacteriano responsável por casos de diarreia aquosa aguda ou
persistente em crianças e adultos, mundialmente. Até o momento, foram
descritos inúmeros fatores de virulência para esse patótipo, tanto de origem
plasmidial quanto cromossomal. Uma característica amplamente discutida sobre
as cepas deste grupo é sua heterogenicidade genética. Contudo, o padrão de
adesão agregativa (AA) em arranjo de “tijolos empilhados” e a formação de um
espesso biofilme observados in vitro são características sempre presentes nessa
categoria. Inúmeras adesinas, toxinas e proteínas associadas a virulência desta
classe foram descritas, além de múltiplos fatores que contribuem para
inflamação induzida pela presença de EAEC. O trabalho refere-se a uma revisão
bibliográfica, com objetivo de apresentar dados acerca desta classe de
patógenos emergentes e seus fatores de virulência descritos até o momento,
além de trazer informações a respeito da sua identificação, diagnóstico e
patogênese. Os artigos selecionados para confecção deste trabalho foram
obtidos através do serviço PubMed pertencente a National Library of Medicine
(NLM) e Science Direct, utilizando os termos EAEC, pathogenesis, virulence
factors, durante o período compreendido entre 1985 e 2021.
Abstract (english)
Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is an important bacterial
enteropathogen responsible for cases of acute or persistent watery diarrhea in
children and adults worldwide. Several virulence factors have been described for
this pathotype, both of plasmidial and chromosomal origin. Like broadly
discussed in the literature this pathogen displays genetic heterogeneity amongst
these isolated strains. However, the aggregative adhesion (AA) pattern in a
"stacked-brick" arrangement and the formation of a thick biofilm observed in vitro
are features always present in this pathovar. Distinct adhesins, toxins, and
virulence-associated proteins have been already described, and multiple factors
contribute to inflammation induced by the presence of EAEC. This bibliography
review brings as the main objective to discuss currently published data about this
class of emerging pathogens and their virulence factors described; as well as
basic information about their identification, diagnosis, and pathogenesis. The
articles selected for this study were obtained through the PubMed service
belonging to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and Science Direct, using
the terms EAEC, pathogenesis, virulence factors, during the period from 1985 to
2021.
