Resumo

This chapter investigates the economic, social, and organizational challenges faced by biorefineries, with the aim of promoting sustainability. Biorefineries play a crucial role in the circular economy by transforming biomass and waste materials into value-added products such as fuels, chemicals, and materials, ultimately reducing dependency on fossil resources. Some of the economic challenges related to initial investment, feedstock availability, market dynamics, and policy frameworks that impact the viability of biorefineries are presented herein. The social challenges explored in this chapter encompass public perception, environmental concerns, employment opportunities, land use conflicts, and the role of biorefineries in achieving global sustainability goals. Additionally, the organizational challenges addressed include integration with existing industries, supply chain management, intellectual property, workforce training, and risk management strategies. To provide practical insights, case studies of successful biorefinery implementations and lessons learned from struggling projects are also introduced and presented. The chapter highlights the importance of addressing these challenges and harnessing the potential of emerging technologies to ensure the success of biorefineries in fostering a sustainable future.
