A Construção da Modernidade em Tavares Bastos e Robert Kalley (1855-1876)

Abstract

Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da pesquisa que analisou a emergência do discurso de modernização do país, no século XIX, tendo o período de 1855-1876 como recorte temporal. Pretende-se conhecer e compreender as razões e motivações da imbricação e possíveis articulações entre as concepções de progresso de Aureliano Cândido Tavares Bastos (1839-1875) e seu projeto de modernidade e o tipo de protestantismo, em processo de inserção, representado por Robert Reid Kalley (1809-1888). O pensamento de Tavares Bastos foi investigado a partir de sua produção bibliográfica e sua biografia, cotejadas por outras obras a seu respeito. A atuação de Kalley durante sua permanência no Brasil, foi compulsada através de pesquisa, sistematização e análise dos dados obtidos nos periódicos em circulação no período, disponíveis na Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, da Biblioteca Nacional. Em paralelo, a bibliografia disponível foi utilizada para sanar dúvidas e preencher lacunas identificas após a compilação dos dados. Como aporte teórico, recorremos ao instrumental interpretativo da noção de campo, segundo Pierre Bourdieu e ao par conceitual espaço de experiência e horizonte de expectativa, desenvolvidos por Reinhart Koselleck. O objetivo final é demonstrar o alinhamento do protestantismo com o discurso de progresso no recorte espaciotemporal da pesquisa, dando visibilidade às suas ações modernizadoras.

This work present the results of the research that analyzed the emergence of the discourse of modernization of the country in the nineteenth century, with the period 1855-1876 as a temporal cut. It is intended to know and understand the reasons and motivations of the imbrication and possible articulations between the conceptions of progress of Aureliano Cândido Tavares Bastos (1839-1875) and his project of modernity and the type of Protestantism, in process of insertion, represented by Robert Reid Kalley (1809-1888). The thought of Tavares Bastos was investigated from his bibliographical production and his biography, compared to other works related to him. Kalley's performance during his stay in Brazil was verified through research, systematization and analysis of the data obtained in periodicals in circulation during the period, available on the Brazilian Digital Library of the National Library. In parallel, the available bibliography was used to solve doubts and fill in identified gaps after data compilation. As a theoretical contribution, we resort to the instrumental interpretive of the notion of field, according to Pierre Bourdieu and to the conceptual pair space of experience and horizon of expectation, developed by Reinhart Koselleck. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the alignment of Protestantism with the discourse of progress in the spatiotemporal cut of research, giving visibility to its modernizing actions.
